The REFORMA de Florida Board has published a Statement against Amendment 3.
Amendment 3 is a Constitutional Amendment promising to lower property taxes. It will be on the ballot in November. When the Governor announced it in May, he said local governments would be required to fund Police, Fire, Schools, Infrastructure, and Natural Resources with remaining property taxes because those are “…the core services we all agree on.”
Libraries were left off the list to be funded along with Public Health and Parks. The Miami Herald quotes the Governor as saying “It’s not going to be allowed to be used on some of the other things that I know are a little more divisive.”
We are an organization dedicated to serving the needs of Latino library professionals and the communities they serve. When public libraries cut budgets, staff, hours, or close, the Latino communities they serve suffer. Our Mission is to promote Library Services to Latinos & the Spanish Speaking in Florida. Amendment 3 goes against that mission.
